2013 was a challenging vintage with heavy spring rains, but by late July we were back on track. Ninety degree temperatures in mid-July led to relatively dry conditions and vigorous growth of the vines through August. A gorgeous September led to perfect ripening of our fruit while maintaining acid balance. We hand-picked our 8-acre Riesling block over three days beginning on October 11 at the peak of ripeness.
The grapes for this wine were sourced from the Lake Effect Vineyard® of Colloca Estate in the town of Sterling and Village of Fair Haven located in the northern most portion of New York State’s famed Finger Lakes Region. The vineyard is aptly named for its location along Little Sodus Bay and proximity to the Great Lake Ontario. Here the grapes benefit from the cool breezes of the lake in summer while in winter, lake effect air keeps the vines warm and the lake effect snow provides a thermal blanket to our vines. Our soils are a combination of rich glacial till and clay soils that have been tiled every third row. We planted eight acres of grafted Riesling clones 10, 90, 110, 198, and 239 on native American rootstock 3309 on 9x5 spacing and trained them to vertical shoot positioning to control yield.
Our fruit was driven an hour South to Hosmer winery where it was made by Cameron Hosmer and Aaron Roisen. The fruit was destemmed and crushed and he juice was fermented and sat on its lees for seven months. The wine was cold stabilized in stainless steel tanks prior to racking and bottling.
This wine is a crisp balance of fruit and acidity with floral and citrus notes and minerality expressed from our rich clay and glacier till soils.
