2015 bud break followed a mild winter and continued to be a remarkably long and sun-soaked growing season in Upstate New York. Short stretches of drought and two week long temperatures over 90 degrees caused our vines to venture deep to find water. It was known as a textbook growing season and represented our inaugural vintage.
The grapes for this wine were sourced from the Lake Effect Vineyard® of Colloca Estate in the town of Sterling and Village of Fair Haven, located in the northern most portion of New York State’s famed Finger Lakes Region. The vineyard is aptly named for its location along Little Sodus Bay and proximity to the Great Lake Ontario. Here the grapes benefit from the cool breezes of the lake in summer, while in winter, lake effect air keeps the vines warm, and the lake effect snow provides a thermal blanket to our vines. Our soils are a combination of rich glacial till and clay soils that have been tilled every third row. We planted one acre of Colmar clone Chardonnay grafted on 3309 native American root stock on 9x5 spacing and trained the vines to vertical shoot positioning to control yield.
Neighbours, friends and family picked the perfectly ripe Chardonnay fruit in mid-September of 2013, and it was immediately hauled down to the Finger Lakes where it was crushed and pressed. We also added a small parcel of Chardonnay fruit sourced from a neighbor grape grower on Lake Ontario to help boost our low volume. We purchased new Francois Frères French Oak barrels and aged this wine for nine months. This luscious wine emerged that was then aged in bottle for a full year prior to release.
Our 2013 Chardonnay has aromatics of Crème Brulee and Vanilla that follows with flavors ofsweet pear and figs mid palate, finishing with hints of coconut and a rich and supple mouth feel.
